Charlton’s Jonathan Leko gives a reminder of how useful he can be
Jonathan Leko offered Lee Bowyer a reminder of how useful he can be for Charlton Athletic in their 2-2 draw against Hull City.
On the chalkboard
Lyle Taylor is seemingly getting closer to making his return from injury, having come off the bench in each of the Addicks’ last three games.
Therefore, Bowyer will likely be considering ways to fit him back into the team, especially due to his status at the club, amassing five goals and an assist in the first six games of the season.
Macauley Bonne has also got on the scoresheet with regularity this campaign, coming up with six goals, adding an assist to that tally.
Leko has played more games than either of the others, recording five goals and four assists, so may have felt he needed to prove to Bowyer that he deserves to be in the team no matter who is available.
Making an impact
If this was the case, then the 20-year-old certainly went about it in the right way, even if it wasn’t enough to earn Bowyer’s side the three points.
His highlight of the game came when he got his fourth assist of the campaign, as he ran at the Hull defence, before firing in a low cross for Naby Sarr to convert with ease.
The man on loan from West Bromwich Albion was effective and efficient with the ball outside of that, making two dribbles, while also maintaining a pass success rate of 86% – a number that was 15% higher than any other Charlton player on the day.
He even made a solid defensive contribution, completing both of his attempted tackles, two clearances and two interceptions.

It was a good all-round performance from the 20-year-old, that will have ensured he stays in Bowyer’s thoughts, even if Taylor is put back in the team.
