Dominic Iorfa’s arrival could prompt Rangers’ James Tavernier to be even better

According to a recent report from The Scottish Sun, Rangers are interested in a move for defender Dominic Iorfa. The 23-year-old currently plays his football at Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers having come up through the ranks at the West Midlands club, although no senior football under Nuno Espirito Santo this term has called his future at Molineux into question.

And reports suggest that Steven Gerrard’s Rangers, who were reportedly keen on the right back during the summer, are seeking to reignite their interest in the 23-year-old with a reported £500,000 deal a possibility – a move which could prompt the impressive James Tavernier to be even better.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, 27-year-old Tavernier made the move to Ibrox back in 2015 after a short time at Wigan Athletic, and he has since gone on to become an absolute revelation for the Gers with a remarkable 35 goals and 51 assists in 167 games for the club, the vast majority of which coming from right back.

Many forwards would be seriously happy with numbers like that let alone someone who turns out at right back every week, but at the moment there is little competition for the Englishman to worry about, especially given Jon Flanagan, another right back signed in the summer, has been deputising at left back recently.

And while Wolves’ Iorfa is unlikely to command regular football ahead of Tavernier, his arrival would give his fellow Englishman something to think about given just how talented the 23-year-old is.

Iorfa may have struggled for regular football following Santo’s appointment as Wolves boss back in the summer of 2017, to the point that he was sent out on loan to Ipswich Town last season, but prior to that the 23-year-old had proven to be a hugely adept defender at Championship level with 93 appearances for the West Midlands club.

And while he doesn’t appear to possess the same level of attacking pedigree as Rangers’ Tavernier – there aren’t many full backs in the country that do – he is an adept defender but also carries a threat going forward, thus exactly what Gerrard will be looking for.

What’s more, bringing Iorfa to the club may prompt Tavernier to be even better knowing that there is a more than able deputy waiting in the wings – it’s a move which can only be good news for the Light Blues in their Scottish Premiership title challenge.

And for just £500,000, given the potential Iorfa possesses at the tender age of 23, it appears to be an absolute steal, much like the steal they pulled off in luring Tavernier to Ibrox for just £200,000 back in 2015.

As such, with the right back department somewhat lacking in sufficient depth outside of Tavernier, the arrival of Iorfa would be a very shrewd addition indeed – one that would finally give the Gers captain something to think about, at the same time potentially likely him to perform even better.
